ArcelorMittal Liberia announces new social development projects – FrontPageAfrica

BUCHANAN – ArcelorMittal Liberia announced the launch of several new social development projects for Bong, Nimba and Grand Bassa counties, as well as at the national level to further support communities in the counties where it operates.

Outlining the projects recently in Bong, Nimba and Grand Bassa counties after separate meetings with the superintendents of the three counties, AML Head of Government and Community Relations Marcus Wleh said the launch of the new initiatives will help to deepen AML’s partnership and strengthen relationships with its communities.

“We believe these activities would bring us closer together and strengthen our existing strong partnership as we enter 2021 together and continue moving forward,” Wleh said.

The projects announced by ArcelorMittal Liberia include a fifty thousand dollar ($ 50,000) scholarship program for public college and high school students in Nimba, Bong and Grand Bassa counties; Donation of school supplies to 50 schools in communities around the mines and the railroad in the three counties; Provision of fifteen thousand USD ($ 15,000) as logistical support to help Nimba, Grand Bassa and Bong counties prepare for the 2021/2022 County National Sports Meeting; Renovation of the roof of the GW Harley hospital in Sanniquellie, Nimba county; and the launch of the ArcelorMittal Liberia football tournament.

Other initiatives include:

  • Solar electrification of the streets of the canton of Yekepa;
  • Renovation of Zolowee Public School in Nimba County;
  • Sponsorship of a youth conference;
  • Launch of community health and public safety awareness activities around railways and highways as well as weeklong volunteer activities by AML employees and community residents.

These initiatives were highly recommended and considered timely by Superintendents Esther Walker of Bong, Nelson Korquio of Nimba County and Janjay Baikpeh of Grand Bassa.
